E2 Challenge, Acadia University
The Nova Scotia E2 Challenge is an initiative of the Arthur Irving Academy for the Environment at Acadia University. Launching in spring 2011, the goal is for Nova Scotians to reduce their energy use greenhouse gas emissions by signing up and logging their household energy use and transportation emissions online each month.
Headspace worked with the team at Acadia to develop a bright, modern website highlighting the goals of the challenge, with a customizable, downloadable action plan users could create to help keep them on track with their emissions reduction goals. The site was built using Expression Engine 2.0.
The site pulls in data from a calculator, built using Symfony technology, which enables users to enter their data for a number of different fields – energy consumption, kilometers traveled, make and model of car, and more. Data is displayed in a Community Challenge sidebar, where two participating communities in the province compete to get the highest percentage of their population on board with the challenge. Each individual participating from a challenge community is automatically added to the challenge total of their town or city.
The site features an Ask the Experts tab where users can submit their own emissions-related questions and downloadable email alerts and calendar alerts reminding them when it’s time to input their monthly data. The challenge’s Twitter feed is also pulled in for up-to-the-minute information.
Launched in May 2011, the program will be running over the following year and is anticipated to garner lots of attention throughout the province as awareness grows.
